The Empire State Building has been named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The building located at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th street was given its name in honor of the nickname for New York State. Standing at 1,453 feet 8 9/16 inches tall, with 12 floors and a 23 foot pinnacle, which is covered by broadcast antennas and topped with a lightning rod., the empire State Building was the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until the completion of the World Trade Center's North Tower in 1972. The Empire State Building is currently the second tallest skyscraper in the Americas, surpassed by only the Willis Tower, formerly the Sears Tower.
The Empire State Bulding has both an indoor and outdoor observation deck located on the 86th floor, as well as an observatory located on the 12nd floor which to date has been visited by over 11 million people. Visitors may also enjoy the New York Skyride, a motion simulator attraction on the second floor which takes you on a simulated aerial tour over the city.
Floodlight were added to the Empire State Building in 1964 in order to illuminate the top of the building at night. While normally bathed in white light, floodlight colors are frequently changed to reflect seasonal and other events such as green for St. Patrick's day or purple and white in honor of the graduating students on New York University.
